It Matters Whom You Marry by BY BISHOP FRANCIS WALE OKE

 It Matters Whom You Marry
by BY BISHOP FRANCIS WALE OKE

"Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? (2 Cor. 6:14)"

If indeed you are a true child of God, then it matters whom you marry. As a believing parent, it matters whom your child marries.
The matter of marriage is so central to a person’s life and future happiness, as well as the fulfillment of the plan and purpose of God for his or her life. It is an issue that should be given all the diligence and prayerfulness it deserves.

Throughout the Scripture, God treats marriage as a serious matter. God’s covenant people in the Scripture gave the matter of marriage a very careful and proper attention.
It was God that gave the Eve to Adam (Gen.2:18). Abraham insisted that Isaac his son should not marry amongst the Canaanites. He sent his servant to pick a wife from amongst his people. Isaac warned his son Jacob, Do not marry any of these Canaanites women. Instead, go at once to paddan-aram, to the house of your grandfather Bethuel, ad marry one of your uncle Laban’s daughters. May God Almighty bless you and give you many children. And may your descendants become a great assembly of nations (Gen.28:1-4).

How properly you marry will determine how well connected you will be with the covenant blessing of God.
In several places in the Bible, God warns His people not to inter marry with the idolatrous Canaanites people but rather to intermarry amongst themselves as God’s covenant people.
Our text today says you cannot be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. As a believer, you cannot marry someone:
1.       Who is not born again.
2.       Who is a backslider.
3.       Who is living in sin and is not willing to repent
4.       Who is already married
5.       Who wants to engage you in sexual activities before marriage
6.       Who do not share your faith, beliefs and core values
You are to marry whosoever you want, but “only in the Lord” (1 Cor.7:39).
May the Lord guide and direct you in this crucial matter. May he lead you to joy and true fulfillment. May you be blessed with wonderful offsprings. May you inherit the covenant blessings of Abraham your father in Jesus mighty name.
